In vitro fertilization, also known as IVF is a common procedure that is used for those who are looking to conceive a baby. With this treatment, an egg is fertilized by sperm in a lab setting. At New Hope Center for Reproduction Medicine, we offer this service to help someone have a baby.
On a national level, a “fresh” IVF cycle usually costs about $12,000. Additional medications needed to increase the success of an IVF pregnancy can generally cost up to $5,000.
During this process, a woman’s period of ovulation is closely monitored. Eggs are harvested transvaginally using inducing medications. That egg is then mixed with fresh sperm for fertilization.
Unfortunately, Virginia is not a state that has infertility insurance coverage laws. How much insurance covers an IVF procedure depends significantly on the type of insurance you have. Some carriers will only cover the diagnostic part of the treatment, while others will cover more of the procedure. You should check with your carrier to see what infertility treatment coverage is available for your current plan.
Whether or not IVF is worth the cost of conceiving a child is a difficult question to give a blanket answer to. This consideration is dependent on each person’s current situation in their life. Our providers are available to guide you through this decision-making process and can answer any of your questions you may have about the IVF process.
Given the high costs of IVF, we can explore with you another way to improve your chances to conceive a child. In fact, some of these methods may work just as well and cost less. With your visit to our facility, our doctors will perform a comprehensive examination to help you determine which treatment is best for you.
Some of the alternative treatments include:
Fertility drugs – For couples that have a low sperm count or don’t ovulate regularly, these drugs can boost egg production.
Intrauterine insemination – For couples that have low sperm count or slow-moving sperm, the sperm is directly injected into the uterus. This method is also used if a woman’s body cannot “tolerate” the sperm.
Donor sperm – Sperm from another man, is used when there is fertility or genetic issues with a man. This is also common for single women or same-sex couples who want a child.
Reproductive Surgery – Used to correct an anatomical issue that is preventing pregnancy.
The chances of getting pregnant on the first try are not as high as you may think. Even young, fertile couples only have about a 20% chance of conceiving a child in any month. If a woman is young, healthy, and meet some other conditions, IVF success rates are at least 40%. The majority of women have a success rate of about 20% to 35%, according to the National Infertility Association.
There is no guarantee that you will become pregnant on your first IVF attempt. The older you get, the more likely you will need a second IVF cycle to conceive a child.
