What should I look for when choosing a sperm donor?

There are two ways when you can look for a sperm donor, you can go the anonymous way, or you can go and with a known donor. If you go with the anonymous route, you will be able to select a donor based on the qualities that are most favorable to you. If you go with a known donor, you would have to get consent previously before donation.

A few things that you should look for when choosing your sperm donor include:

  • Donors’ medical history
Knowing the medical history of your donor is extremely important, knowing if they have any inherited conditions that they can pass down through genetics to your child is important as you need to know and understand all the risks your child may face if you go with a certain donor.
  • Donors’ physical characteristics
Your donor will provide around 50% of the DNA to your child, so it is important to consider the physical attributes and physical characteristics that you would want to see in your child.
  • Donors’ education
How do you measure success potential may be that of education, you may prefer a sperm donor with a certain level of education.
  • Donors’ hobbies
As well, you may want to see certain hobbies and interests as well as traits in your child’s then you would look for a sperm donor that is into similar hobbies.
  • Donors’ interests
Perhaps you would like a sperm donor with certain interests, maybe similar to yours so that these interests may be passed on to your child.
  • Donors’ personal values
Personal values such as food, religion or a certain faith, if so looking for a sperm donor with certain personal values would be considered important.
  • If the donor has given multiple samples
If you’re looking to have more children in the future from the same donor, it’s best if you go with a sperm donor that is willing to give multiple donations.

What type of donor screening is performed?

The reason we freeze our sperm donor’s sperm is due to the screening that needs to be done before we can release the sperm donation. In many sperm banks, screening of our potential sperm donors usually includes the following:

  • Genetic diseases
  • Chromosomal abnormalities
  • Sexually transmitted infections

These screens are done due to the potential that these can be transmitted to the child if the sperm donor has any.

We normally store sperm for up to six months in which the donor will be continuously re-tested for sexually transmitted infections. We do this to ensure that no new infections have arisen or developed since the time of the donation.

Other screening requirements include:

  • Medical history of the sperm donor as well as the history of their children, siblings, parents, and grandparents for up to four generations back. This is all done through the sperm donor’s family doctor.
  • A risk assessment for HIV
  • Blood tests as well as urine tests for:
    • HIV 1
    • HIV 2
    • HTLV 1
    • HTLV 2
    • Hepatitis B
    • Hepatitis C
    • Syphilis
    • Gonorrhea
    • Chlamydia
    • Cytomegalovirus
