Gynecologists and Urologists often go ahead and do additional training in reproductive endocrinology, which is extra training above and beyond the three extra years past their obstetrician gynecology residency. Once completed, they are considered fertility specialists.
Due to the fertility specialist having particularly specialized training to be approved reproductive endocrinology doctors, they are the doctor to see for fertility issues outside of your obstetrician-gynecologist.
The main thing about the first appointment at a fertility specialist will be the specialist getting as much information, medical history, and initial testing done and gathered as possible. This is to gather as much information and results as they need to be able to offer you the best treatment moving forward into your fertility journey.
A few things that will go on for your first appointment includes:
The first thing that your fertility specialist wants to know is if you’re ovulating naturally or not. Before your next appointment start keeping records when you’re ovulating whether you are doing this with a basal body temperature, ovulation sticks, etc.
During the appointment, the fertility specialist will discuss you, as well as your partner’s medical history to go over any fertility test, they may recommend you to get done, to help find out why you were having difficulty conceiving a child. You may have to do a blood test, physical examinations, semen analyses for the men, ultrasound for the women, as well as any other tests.
Once all the fertility treatment tests have been completed, we will provide a diagnosis of the results that we found from all the tests. You may or may not have an answer as to why you are having difficulty conceiving, as some there are no reasons why they are not able to conceive within the first 12 months. Our fertility specialist will then review the fertility options that will work for you before moving forward. Most infertility treatments will require a medication to be taken with therapy or injection, these medications are to be taken to promote ovulation. Some of the medications may have side effects, which our fertility specialists will go over with you before you start them.
For choosing a fertility clinic, or a fertility doctor, you will want to decide if you want to go with your obstetrician-gynecologist, or if you want to see a fertility specialist. A good starting point is to talk to your friends, family, doctor, and any local support groups.
Another fantastic way is to use search engines to go to research clinics to find out more information on their websites, the CDC fertility statistics report page, call the clinic directly to speak to a representative, look up any reviews left from current or previous patients on they are google page, and finally setting up a consultation meeting and interviewing the potential fertility specialist.
